Kodi vs Plex: Which is the best for streaming?

Are you having a difficult time choosing between Kodi or Plex? If your answer to this question is Yes then you’ve come to the right place. Kodi and Plex are under the same category as both are media centres and most probably the best there are out there. If you’re here then you’ve probably narrowed your options down to this two.

Now, before we begin, we’ll first have to look at what Media Centres are. For those of you that don’t already know, Media centre apps are apps that bring all of your Media files into one space and often categorize them for better use. Instead of going through different folders in your PC to see videos, images, etc, you can simply open a Media centre app and see every Media on your PC categorized accordingly.

Kodi vs Plex – What are Kodi and Plex?

Kodi is an open-source media centre software developed by XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium that makes the software free to download and use. Kodi software brings all the Media content you have on your PC into one place for easy access and also categorizes them accordingly which makes it easier to locate any Media file you want off your PC.

Kodi

It is available on Android, Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS if you have a jailbroken iOS device. The biggest difference and perhaps advantage Kodi has over Plex is probably its wide array of customization options available. Kodi has tons and tons of customization similar to Android and can be made to look anyhow you want in order to get a more personalized experience.

You can add skins, remove or add categories, organize movies based on their genre and so much more. There is also a space for add-ons which is one of the reasons users looking for streaming-based software go for Kodi. With these add-ons, you can watch and also record live TV channels. However, there has been a debate on the illegality of the Feature as some people use it to access pirated content. Asides from that, add-ons are a nice little addition to Kodi which Plex doesn’t have.

What You Need to Know about Plex

Plex, on the other hand, is also a media centre software like Kodi which is also free to download and use. It offers almost, if not all of the Kodi features, except for the customization part. It doesn’t work on Linux like Kodi but it is available on Android, macOS, Windows, and iOS – even if you’re not jailbroken.

Plex

Where Plex shines is its ability to stream media contents to other devices which it does very well but there is a catch. Kodi can also do this but it isn’t an out-of-box Feature and can be quite complicated. With Plex, this feature comes with it however, you’ll need to purchase the Plex Pass Monthly, Yearly, or Lifetime subscription. Once you do that, you’ll be able to let’s say watch the movies you have on PC on your Android, MacBook, or iOS device.

Also, the Plex Pass, when purchased, allows you to watch Live TV channels that are available in your region when connected to an HD antenna and digital tuner.

Kodi vs Plex – Which one is better?

Talking about Kodi vs Plex and which is better between the two then it boils down to preference. At its core, both software is practically the same – a media centre bringing all your Media content under one roof for easy access. However, it is the little things that different this two software which are preferential. For example, if you like customization a lot then Kodi is the best for you as it has more customization than Plex. Do you like streaming your PC content via another device? Go with Plex. Since both software is free, I’ll recommend you give both a shot and then decide which one to settle for.
