The Oculus team initially shocked the VR market with several big announcements. First, it was a permanent price slash to $400 for the Rift (with controllers). Now they have unveiled a new VR headset, the Oculus Go which is an upgrade on the Santa Cruz prototype. The Oculus Go is a standalone Gear VR headset. Meaning it does not need a phone inside it to function, it can’t stream a game or video from a PC either. The games run on the device itself, and there’s already a library of titles to choose from the Gear VR games. Android wasn't specifically mentioned anywhere on their site, but it has to be, right? To enjoy your game control and interaction, there is a single motion controller which has a touch area and a trigger. The Oculus Go will available in the market in early 2018 with price starting from $200, almost half the price of a Rift. And it also has a higher resolution screen than the Rift, 2,560 x 1,440px for the single panel than the 2,160 x 1,200px on the Rift (split between two panels). There's a switch from OLED to LCD on the Oculus Go, although the frame rate is still unknown. The Oculus isn't actually the best thing we have seen in a while, there are a few downsides. You’ll be playing just smartphone games, which do offer variety but no advanced cutting-edge graphics. There’s no actual info on the chipset, but an unofficial source claims its Snapdragon 821. No external hardware is used for tracking, which means it will be less accurate than the Rift. The Oculus Go is very compact and portable though, especially if you compare it to Rift. Since there are built-in speakers, I don't really think you would be needing headphones. But if you still do, there's a jack. The headset is made from a breathable cloth and you can wear it with glasses. I’ll reserve any further judgments for now, but I'm still not entirely convinced on how this is better than the $100 Gear VR or Daydream VR. Even if you need a phone, which I'm sure you probably have one already, you can just buy a better one with the $100 you save off the Oculus Go.
