Journey of Google Pixel Phones Archives

With the launch of the Google Pixel 3 series of phones, we decided to look at all the smartphones that led up to this phone. To help with this we have a super cool infographic created by the people HomeTop which highlights the journey of the older Nexus and Pixel range of smartphones. Google’s hardware journey started with the HTC G1 or HTC Dream, now this smartphone was special as it was the world’s first Android phone. This phone is what started the game for Android and despite its rather humble beginnings led to Android being one of the dominating players in the smartphone OS market. The G1 was a competitor to the iPhones but was still old school in the way that it still had a slide-out keyboard which was seen on most PDA’s of those time and even came with a trackball. Given it was launched in 2008 they specifications are no doubt, feeble. The processor was a Qualcomm MSM7201A single-core chipset. The RAM was a middling 192MB (Android apps now take more space than that). Oh, and did we mention the display? It was a tiny 3.2-inch screen with 320 x 480 pixels. That's right, no retina quality, no notch, no slim bezels. Talking of cameras, it had one, just one. A 3.15MPx rear unit and no front-facing selfie camera. But despite all the specifications, the G1 was important and without it, we never would have got the brilliant devices that we have today. But Google’s real journey started with the Nexus series of smartphones as the HTC G1 wasn't exactly a Nexus device. The Nexus series of smartphones were designed to give you great software experience, value hardware and, fast and regular updates. This remained the recipe from the Nexus One all the way up to the last Nexus, the Nexus 6P. But Google wanted a different product, something that would offer a more premium experience and that's what they did with the Pixel series of smartphones. They gave the Pixel phones a superb display, powerful processors and class-leading cameras. So good were the Pixel cameras that the Pixel 2/ 2XL are still considered by experts as one of the best smartphones cameras in the market. Sticking to this new recipe we have the Pixel 3 series of smartphones that push the envelope further. Both the Pixels have the latest Snapdragon 845 processor, 6GB of RAM, 5.5 and 6.7 inches of screen real estate and again a great pair of cameras. If you contrast this to the first Nexus or the very first Android smartphones you can see how far Google, Android and the smartphone market has come. Everything from the design, software, camera, processor and battery have improved tremendously and the latest Pixels are the best of the pack.
