Xiaomi Mi 8 debuts alongside Mi 8 Explorer Edition and Mi 8 SE

Xiaomi Mi 8 was unveiled at the company’s “8th Anniversary” live event in China. The Mi 8 was released alongside two other variants, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition and cheaper variant, the Mi 8 SE. The Mi 8 was built around a 6.21-inch AMOLED Full HD+ display from Samsung. It has a resolution of 2248 x 1080 pixels with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and reaching an impressive 83.8% screen-to-body ratio.

This is the first Xiaomi smartphone with a notch, which can be hidden as well. The Snapdragon 845 chip reigns supreme underneath, just like in every other flagship in 2018. There’s only one variant in terms of RAM which is 6GB, while the storage is 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.

For photography, the Mi 8 debuted at number 5 on DXOMark with 99 points, overtaking iPhone X and Google Pixel 2. It sports dual 12MP + 12MP sensors, with a dual-LED flash in-between. The cameras come with 1.4-micron pixels, OIS, dual-pixel autofocus and AI-powered portrait mode. Xiaomi really proved its worth with the cameras on this device, the camera uses AI to identify scenes and apply the best settings, there’s portrait mode as well.

The selfie camera is a 20MP shooter with f/2.0 aperture, the camera uses pixel binning to create larger virtual pixels which will help for improved selfies. The GPS also features dual-frequency, with L1 and L5 bands for a more accurate navigation.

The Mi 8 Explorer Edition (Mi 8 Pro) sports the same features with the Mi 8 plus more. The body has a see-through glass back with an in-display fingerprint scanner, the notch on the Explorer Edition houses a 3D Face Unlock lens that unlocks your device even in a dark environment.

The lens’ infrared light will help out in unlocking the device in dark environments. This is the first Android smartphone with the 3D Face Unlock lens, following the iPhone X style. Speaking of iPhone X, the Mi 8 Pro comes with the Animoji feature, letting you record little animations of emoji that track your facial expressions. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition only has one variant, the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant.

The Mi 8 SE is a cheaper variant of the two devices above, it has a slightly smaller 5.88-inch AMOLED screen. It’s also the first smartphone to house the Snapdragon 710 chip, which is the most powerful mid-range chip from Qualcomm.

The 6GB/64GB variant of the Mi 8 will retail for $421, 6GB/128GB model has a $468) price tag. The bigger 6GB/256GB version will retail for $515, while the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition (Mi 8 Pro) will be available for $577. If you’re on a budget then the Mi 8 SE retails for $299 for the 4GB/64GB and $349 for the 6GB/64GB. Will you be getting one?
