Xiaomi Mi 8 Full Specs and Features Review

Xiaomi Mi 8 has been unveiled by the Chinese OEM at the company’s 8th year anniversary in China. The device is the first Xiaomi smartphone coming officially with a notch. The notch houses a 3D infrared face recognition just like the iPhone X, unlocking your device even in the dark.

The flagship device spots a tall screen and houses the Snapdragon 845 chip, just like most flagships. We can see the iPhone X-like dual shooters at the back, however, the cameras on the Mi 8 outperformed the iPhone X on DXOMark with an overall rating of 99. Let’s find out more about this device.

DESIGN

It looks like the Mi Mix 2S from the back, sporting an aluminium alloy overall unibody, it’s also covered in a Corning Gorilla Glass 5, making it more exquisite and sleek. We have to admit the dual shooters with the dual-LED flash in-between definitely adds to the beauty of the device, just like on the Mix 2S.

There’s a rear fingerprint scanner at its usual position, just in case you’re not a fan of the trending Face ID. It doesn’t come with any IP certification, so it isn’t water resistant. It measures 7.6mm in thickness and weighs 175g overall, it’s available in Black, Blue, White and Gold colours.

DISPLAY

This is officially the first Xiaomi smartphone with the trending notched screen. The notch houses the infrared lens and light for 3D face recognition, there is a proximity sensor, earpiece and selfie camera as well. Disappointingly, the bottom bezel came back out to play a little bit.

The device was built around a 6.21-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, which offers breathtaking visuals. It boasts 1440 x 2880 pixels in resolution and 403 pixels per inch density. The screen stretches up to 83.8% screen-to-body ratio, with HDR10 complaint, DCI-P3 and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by the Snapdragon 845 chip from Qualcomm, which is the best chip from the company at the moment. The Snapdragon 845  is an Octa-core processor with 64-bit CPU architecture that operates at a blazing speed of 2.8GHz with 10nm FinFET+ process technology. In the graphics department, Adreno 630 from Qualcomm is in charge.

There’s only one variant in terms of RAM, which is 6GB, with a memory speed of 1.8GHz. If you need bigger RAM, the Mi Mix 2S has 8GB of that. In terms of storage, the Mi 8 has three versions, there’s one with 256GB, 128GB and a cheaper variant with 64GB. You have to choose wisely because you can’t upgrade further. The Xiaomi Mi 8 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 10 which was unveiled at the event as well.

CAMERA

The Mi 8 debuted at number 5 on DXOMark, taking over iPhone X and Google Pixel 2 thanks to its dual 12MP + 12MP dual shooters. The first 12MP shooter on top is an IMX363 Sony powered sensor with f/1.8 aperture, 1.4µm pixel size, 4-axis OIS and dual-pixel PDAF. The second 12MP S5K3M3 telephoto camera from Samsung has f/2.4 aperture and brings AI features enhancement for over 200 scenes.

Features on the cameras include 2x optical zoom, dual pixel phase detection autofocus, dual-tone LED flash, Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama, 4-in-1 pixel binning and lots more. It shoots videos of 2160p@60fps, 1080p@30/240fps. The 20MP rear shooter has f/2.0 aperture, 1.8µm pixel size and AI beautify and portrait settings.

BATTERY

The Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by a non-removable Li-Po 3400mAh battery with fast charging technology.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

Xiaomi Mi 8 is available on shopping stores, starting from $449 to $549, that’s about (N150,000 – N180,000).
