Xiaomi Redmi S2 is Xiaomi’s first smartphone from the S series. According to Xiaomi, the S series will be selfie focused for selfie lovers. The S2 comes with an AI-powered 16MP selfie camera that takes breathtaking selfies.

The body also looks like the Redmi Note 5 Pro, with a more attractive design and feel. Specs-wise, it houses the Snapdragon 625 chip with an octa-core processor, dishing out an 18:9 ratio bezel-less display with a dual rear camera.

DESIGN

The design looks like what we’ve seen from the latest Xiaomi mid-range smartphones. But the Redmi S2 looks more premium, thanks to its aluminium body with dual curved antenna lines. This two-piece antenna lines gave the S2 more premium feel than others

Apart from being sleek, there are an iPhone X-like dual back cameras at the top left corner, with the LED flash sitting in between them. The fingerprint scanner is in its usual position, it measures 8.1mm in thickness and weighs 170g overall. In terms of colouring, you can get it in Rose Gold, Champagne Gold and Platinum Silver.

DISPLAY

This isn’t the first bezel-less smartphone from Xiaomi obviously, but the screen is such a delight to stare at. There are extremely narrow bezels, giving room for taller display in landscape mode. While the top and bottom bezels are minimal as well.

Focusing on the screen now, the 5.99-inch HD+ IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen has a standard resolution to conserve battery life. It boasts of 720 x 1440 pixels in resolution and 269 pixels per inch density for clear visuals. It’s also worth to note that the screen stretches up to 74.5% screen-to-body ratio.

HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE

Under the hood, you have the Snapdragon 625 chip from Qualcomm, an 8-core processor with 64-bit CPU architecture. The octa-core processor clocks at a fast speed of 2.0GHz with 14nm process technology offering fast performance. The Adreno 506 graphics processor handles graphics efficiently.

Two versions are available here in terms of RAM and storage space, the standard version has 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. While the cheaper variant boasts of 3GB RAM and 32GB storage space. You can upgrade the storage up to 256GB, while the RAM clocks at over 1GHz. Xiaomi Redmi S2 runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with MIUI 9.5 skin.

CAMERA

The Redmi S2 comes with dual 12MP + 5MP cameras that enable you to capture quality photographs. The 12MP shooter has f/2.2 wide aperture, 1.25μm pixel size, PDAF, gyro-EIS, phase detection autofocus and the rest. There’s also a LED flash in-between the cameras for night shots, even though there’s HHT. The AI-powered 16MP selfie shooter has two types of AI shot, there are the AI portrait and AI beauty mode. The beauty mode beautifies your face, while the portrait blurs out other things in the background, focusing only on your face.
