Apple has shown they don’t want to be left behind entering the 5G era. Hence the reason they acquired Intel modem business. The deal is reportedly worth $1 billion and won’t be completed until the fourth quarter of 2019 due to regulatory and other issues.
So, Apple won’t be able to make its own 5G modem early enough for their 2020 iPhones. The company will still have to rely on Qualcomm who will supply 5G modem for the 2020 iPhones. Apple and Qualcomm have settled their legal dispute and are now free to work together again. Apple’s 5G modem will reportedly be ready sometime in 2021 and will likely roll out with the 2021 iPhones.
According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the 2020 iPhones will feature 5.4 inches OLED, 6.1 inches OLED and 6.7 inches OLED displays. The 5.4 and 6.7 inches will be high-end iPhones. While the 6.1 inches phone will be for budget users.
He further claims that in order to cut cost on Apple’s first batch 5G phones, the company plans on using sub-6GHz functionality than the mmWave technology. Apple also believes that by boosting 5G developments, it will in return benefit their AR ecosystem.
