Helio P80, MediaTek’s newest and best upper-midrange chipset, is currently in the works, recent reports say. When released, it will offer a superb AI performance, as revealed last week when it came second to Snapdragon 8150, expected to power all flagship devices in 2019 — not produced by Huawei.
According to a new report released today, the Oppo R19 will be the first smartphone to come with the Helio P80. This mobile device will be launched next year and will come as a successor of the R17, recently released, powered by the Snapdragon 670. When it comes to featuring MediaTek wares on mobile phones, this is not a new terrain for the Oppo brand, which designed the R15 with the Helio P60 chipset.
But in the R17 family, the Chinese consumer electronics and mobile communication company opted against making use of a MediaTek part owing to a below-par performance. Evidently, this is among the reasons behind the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor company’s decision to undergird the capability of the P80 with a view to winning the heart of Oppo once again.
The Helio P80 is designed on TSMC’s 12nm process and will come with an octa-core CPU that uses ARM’s cores, while there is a possibility that the GPU will be upgraded compared to the P60 or the P70. The P80 chipset is set to be made MediaTek’s premier product for the first half of the year 2019; thus, it should also feature in an array of other smartphones, apart from the Oppo R19.
In a related development, a few days ago, we informed you that Qualcomm, an American semiconductor maker, was reportedly designing a new flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8150, whose launch was anticipated to take place soon. This soon-to-be-released flagship processor will be coming as the successor of the Snapdragon 845, speculated to be dubbed “Snapdragon 8150”, and not “Snapdragon 855”.
