There are reports that Qualcomm might skip releasing the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 and focus on developing its Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. According to leaks from RGclouS the next chipset will maintain is normal + 4 + 3 configuration of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. It will feature a new Cortex X4 Prime Core that can be clocked at up to 3.70 GHz. This will be a 15% clock speed boost over the predecessor.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will be built on TSMCs N4P 4nm node; the iPhone 15 Pro will be the only device powered by a 3nm processor in 2023. Qualcomm will have a 3nm chipset in 2024 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The A17 Bionic will be the only device built on a 3nm processor.
There aren’t enough details about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, but rumors suggest that the chipset will surpass the A17 Bionic in single-core performance. The A17 will have better power efficiency, and rumors are that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy will be better than the A17 Bionic. It remains to be seen, and we will share more details once we test them both.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to feature a Cortex-A715 and new Cortex-A515 cores, but the clock speeds of these cores are unknown. There could be an impact on battery life because of the higher clock speeds of the Cortex X4 prime core. We don’t know how Qualcomm will handle the issue.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 More Thoughts
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 was improved massively when compared to its predecessor. And the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is expected to follow the same path. It will be interesting to see how the chipset will perform when it is officially released.
