The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact was launched together with Xperia XZ2 at the 2018 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As expected, the compact version is the much smaller version of the Xperia XZ2 in terms of screen size.
The body looks quite different as well, with the rear features looking like a totally different Xperia device. Apart from the screen size, we need to find out what else was reduced in the Compact edition. Stay with me, let us review the device together.
DESIGN
It’s still a strong device, the XZ2 Compact is IP68 certified offering dust, water resistance and durability. The glass covering the Aluminium Alloy overall body is scratch resistant and shatterproof as well. You don’t have to worry about having a cracked glass back with the XZ2 Compact.
Looks like Sony is still yet to decide where to put the dual-LED flash. The camera is in the top middle while the dual-LED flash is now by the side, falling from the top on the XZ2. Furthermore, it’s quite bulky for a flagship device though, measuring 12.1 mm in thickness. But nonetheless, it weighs just 168g and available in Black, White Silver, Moss Green and Coral Pink colours.
DISPLAY
The screen got up to 78.46% screen to body ratio, but I won’t call it a totally bezel-less device. Nevertheless, it dishes out a Full View display with impressive visuals. The company’s logo is at the bottom bezel while the top bezel houses the selfie camera, ambient light sensor and speaker grille.
The 5-inch FHD IPS LCD Capacitive touchscreen boasts a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It’s very portable so details on the screen should be sharp and clear with 441 pixels per inch density. It has Triluminos Display, X-Reality Engine and a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protecting it all.
HARDWARE and SOFTWARE
Working underneath is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 MSM8998 chipset with Octa-core processor. Housing the best chipset from Qualcomm and reaching a clock speed of 2.7 GHz. Boasts of a 64-bit CPU architecture, 10nm FinFET LPP process technology, while the Qualcomm Adreno 630 is in charge of everything graphics.
It has a smaller RAM space of just 4GB of RAM, which reaches a memory speed of 1866MHz for smooth multitasking. It comes with the same 64GB storage space to accommodate all your files and upgradeable up to 400GB. The XZ2 Compact runs on Android 8.0 Oreo as well.
CAMERA
Absolutely no difference with the cameras though, the 19MP rear shooter has a f/2.0 aperture. It has a 1.22 um pixel size capturing 5K resolution images. The dual-LED flash is now beside the camera to the left, ready to help out in dark places. At the front, there’s a usual 5MP selfie camera with f/2.2 aperture for the best selfies.
BATTERY
The XZ2 Compact is powered by a Non-Removable Li-Ion 2870mAh battery with Qi wireless charging as well.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact will be available for about $699 from March, that’s about (N200,000 – N230,000).
