On August 13, 2024, Google held its annual Made by Google event, unveiling a range of new devices ahead of its usual schedule. The tech giant introduced several products, including the much-anticipated Pixel 9, a foldable phone, a smartwatch, and TWS earphones. As leaks and rumors had largely exposed the details in advance, the Pixel 9’s launch was anticipated with high expectations.
The Google Pixel 9, the successor to last year’s Pixel 8, features a redesigned, boxy aesthetic with a compact form factor and a flat frame, diverging from its predecessor’s slim profile. The rear camera bar has been streamlined and no longer extends to the edges. The front of the device sports a 6.3-inch display with a central punch-hole cutout and a 120Hz refresh rate. Notably, Google has replaced the optical fingerprint scanner with an ultrasonic one.
In terms of camera upgrades, the Pixel 9 retains its dual rear camera setup, including a 50MP primary sensor. However, the ultra-wide-angle lens has seen a significant upgrade from 12MP to 48MP. The front-facing camera offers a 10.5MP resolution. The smartphone continues to feature popular tools such as Magic Eraser and Best Take.
The Pixel 9 is driven by a Tensor G4 CPU, with 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of internal storage. It comes with a 4,700mAh battery that enables 27W rapid charging and wireless charging. The Pixel 9 runs Android 14 and is expected to receive updates for seven years. New features include an Emergency SOS function that alerts users in crisis situations and protects against malware and phishing scams even when there is no network reception. The smartphone also includes Gemini AI and other upgrades.
The Pixel 9 will be available in Obsidian, Porcelain, Rose, and Green colors. Pricing starts at $800/EUR 899 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB variant priced at $900/EUR 999/Rs 79,999.
