Google has expanded its Pixel 9 series with the introduction of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL models, reviving the XL designation for the first time since the Pixel 4 Pro XL. While the standard and Pro variants show notable differences, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL share many similarities, with the Pro XL offering a few key enhancements over the Pro model.
Both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL feature a boxy design with flat frames and rounded corners. The rear panel showcases a matte finish and a horizontal camera bridge that does not extend to the sides. The camera sensors are housed within a pill-shaped cutout, with the LED flash positioned externally. A temperature sensor, first introduced with the Pixel 8 Pro, is included in both Pro models.
The biggest difference between the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL is in their screens. The Pixel 9 Pro features a 6.34-inch FHD+ screen with a peak brightness of 2,050 nits. In contrast, the Pixel 9 Pro XL features a bigger 6.8-inch display with a resolution of 2,992 x 1,344 pixels and a maximum brightness of 3,000 nits. Both devices use Actua OLED screens with a 120Hz LTPO refresh rate and are protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Google has improved both versions with a quicker ultrasonic fingerprint scanner.
In terms of photography, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL both include a triple rear camera setup: a 50MP main sensor with an f/1.68 aperture for improved low-light performance, a 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 48MP periscope telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom. For selfies, both models are equipped with a 42MP front camera. Additional features include Magic Eraser for removing unwanted objects and Best Take to ensure optimal group photos.
Both devices are powered by the Tensor G4 chipset and include the Titan M2 security chip. They come with 16GB of RAM and offer storage options up to 1TB. The Pixel 9 Pro is supported by a 4,700mAh battery, while the Pro XL features a larger 5,060mAh battery with 45W fast charging capabilities. Running on Android 14, the phones are eligible for seven years of updates and support features such as Gemini AI, Circle to Search, Pixel Screenshots, and Reimagine. Emergency SOS and an ultrawide-band chip are also included.
