Apple has finally unveiled the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini. The iPhone 12 series ushers in a new era for iPhone with 5G network. The series features four iPhones with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max completing the series. In this post, we’ll be focusing on the two smallest variants. Design and Display
The iPhone duo comes in a ceramic shield glass front, which the company claim is tougher than any smartphone glass. The glass is co-developed by “Corning”, the company that manufacturers the popular Gorilla Glass. The frame is a made up of aerospace-grade aluminium. Apple refers to both phones as the “World’s smallest, thinnest, lightest 5G phone.” Compared to iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner, 16% lighter and 15% smaller. The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini has a spill, splash and water-resistant rating. The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini is available in the following body colours – Blue, Green, Product Red, White and Black. The rumours are true, there is no power adapter or Airpods inside the box. Instead, Apple included the fast charging USB Type-C to lightning cable.
The iPhone 12 is built around a 6.1″ Super Retina XDR display that features 2532 x 1170 pixels resolution, 460 pixels per inch, and 60Hz refresh rate. The iPhone 12 Mini uses the same display panel but it’s smaller in size, measuring 5.4″ with 2340 x 1080 pixels resolution and 476 pixels per inch. Their OLED display is vastly more contrast with incredible colour accuracy as it sports a 1200nits of peak brightness.
Hardware and Software
Powering the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini is the Bionic A14 chipset. This chip is capable of performing 11 trillion operations per second which is mind-blowing. It uses a total of six cores CPU (two powerful and four efficient) and four cores GPU. Overall performance is up by about 40% compared to last year’s Bionic A13. The storage configuration for both iPhones is 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
With the 5G network, you can now download movies faster, FaceTime in HD over cellular and stream high-resolution video with lots less lag. The iPhone 12 series is said to have the broadest 5G coverage worldwide with up to 20 5G bands.
Handling the software aspect of the iPhones is the iOS 14 which is packed with shortcuts gets you what you want when you want it. Widgets are redesigned right on your home screen to get you the info you want at a glance. Put the people you talk to the most right at the top of your Messages list by pinning the conversations.
Camera and Battery
At the rear of both iPhones is a dual-camera system. The 12MP f/1.6 wide-angle camera brings in 27% more light and features Night mode just like the 12MP f/2.4 ultrawide camera with 120° FoV. The Night mode kicks in automatically when it senses you’re in an environment with low to no light. Another cool feature is the new Smart HDR 3 with improved white balance, saturation and texture.
Upfront is a TrueDepth 12MP f/2.2 camera for selfies. It features a portrait mode with advanced bokeh and depth control, Animoji and Memoji, Night Mode, Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 3 e.t.c. Face ID is enabled by the TrueDepth camera for facial recognition.
Built inside the iPhone duos is an unspecified rechargeable lithium-ion battery. It does support a 20W adapter (sold separately) for fast charging up to 50% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging support is also available (MagSafe up to 15W & Qi up to 7.5W).

The iPhone 12 will be available for pre-order from October 16 while shipping begins on October 23. The phone retails at $799 which will cost about N380,000 in Nigeria. The iPhone 12 Mini will begin sales on November 6 at $699 while shipping starts on November 13. In Nigeria, you will be able to buy the iPhone 12 mini for around N295,000.
