MediaTek Helio P90 Arrives with a better GPU and CPU

MediaTek just released the Helio P90 SoC which is a successor to the Helio P70 released about 2 months ago. The new SoC brings along some tweaking here and there to improve performance and reduce battery usage. The new MediaTeHelio P90 which is still based on the TMSC 12nm FinFET process technology like its predecessor packs a configuration in terms of it’s CPU Cluster. The new SoC has 2 Cortex-A75 cores clocked at 2.2GHz alongside 6 Cortex-A55 core clocked at 2.0GHz. The new setup is aimed at a significantly better power optimisation and camera capabilities.

Asides the change in the core configurations, it’s also come with support for Google Lens and ARCore with the inclusion of the second generation of MediaTek’s APU for a more accurate AI. The GPU – IMG PowerVR GM9446 clocked at 970 MHz – is also new and provides about 15% improvements compared to the Mali-G72 MP3 on its predecessor. Also, the SoC features AR and MR acceleration which will allow developers to introduce apps using common frameworks such as TensorFlow, TF Lite, Caffe and Caffe2 based on the MediaTek’s NeuroPilot SDK. This was made possible thanks to the partnership between MediaTek’s and Google.

Unfortunately, the new SoC doesn’t come with support for 5G which we have been hearing a lot lately. However, it does support dual 4G VoLTE and a new Bluetooth 5.0 and WiFi standard (Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac). Production of the chipset have started already and devices with this chipset are expected to start popping up as early as Q1 of 2019. Meanwhile, MediaTek will roll out an update for devices with Helio P60 and Helio P70 which will bring support for Google Lens and ARCore, Hopefully before the year runs out.
