MediaTek launches two new Gaming-centric chipsets – the Helio G90 & G90T

Taiwanese modem company, MediaTek have unveiled two new gaming-centric chipsets. Gaming is gradually taking over the mobile device space.

The Helio G90 and G90T debuts on the new G-series and will look to cater to the mid-range gaming smartphone. Just like what we saw Qualcomm do with the release of Snapdragon 855 plus (a gaming chipset) which already debuted on the new Asus ROG phone 2. Xiaomi has gone to confirm a new smartphone will be released in Indian soon featuring the Helio G90T.

Both SoCs features an Octa-core processor consisting of two ARM Cortex-A76 cores and six Cortex-A55 cores. Surprisingly, this is the combination you’ll see on Qualcomm flagship SoC. The graphics processing unit featured on both G90 and G90T is Mali-G76 GPU. And they are built on TSMC’s 12 nm FinFET manufacturing process technology.

The difference between the G90 and G90T chipsets are RAM and Camera. The G90 is compatible with up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and supports a triple camera setup with 48MP sensor. While the G90T is compatible with up to 10GB LPDDR4x RAM and supports quad-camera setup with 64MP sensor.

Being a gaming-centric chipset, means they are built for gaming. They both come with HyperEngine game technology. This includes a wide array of functions all put together to improve the overall gaming experience. To boost signal strength, the technology has a network engine that combines both WiFi and LTE connectivity automatically. We all know how important signal strength is when it comes to online gaming.

Another good feature of these chipsets is the support of dual Wi-Fi bands that enables a single antenna to connect to two routers or WiFi bands simultaneously to bring steady and consistent internet connection. Also, there is HDR10 standard and display touch acceleration to add more fluid gaming experience and overcome lag, jitter and latency.

All these looks promising to be honest, but we have to wait for the new Xiaomi smartphone with Helio G90T to put the chipset into a test.
