MediaTek to Launch Helio G90 Chipset for Gaming Smartphones

MediaTek has released a teaser poster of an upcoming Helio G90 chipset. This is going to be a gaming-centric chipset for smartphone and will be the company first chipset dedicated to gaming.

This is really an amazing time for all mobile gamers, just yesterday we saw Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset, which is primarily focused on gaming. The mobile gaming market is growing exponentially and brands are starting to realise that now.

The MediaTek Helio G90 is scheduled to launch on 30th of July in Shanghai, China but there is no official information as to when smartphones will feature the chipset.

According to the official poster, the G in the chipset’s name stands for ‘Gaming’. MediaTek is keeping the specs of the Helio G90 on a tight leash. We do know the chipset will be similar to their recently released Helio P90, cause of the naming sequence. Maybe, the Helio G90 is just a gaming-focused version of the Helio P90.

If our speculating is true, then we are looking at a chipset built on a 12nm manufacturing process technology with two Cortex-A75 cores clocking at 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocking at 2.0GHz. While the Helio P90 features a PowerVR GM9446 (970MHz) graphics processing unit, we don’t think the Helio G90 will come with that same GPU. Although, the GPU is 15% better in performance than the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU used in other MediaTek chipset like the Helio P70.

The Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset will most definitely be featured on high-end smartphones. Leaving the mid-range market without a gaming chipset of their own. This is where we think the Helio G90 comes into play. It will be a gaming chipset for mid-range smartphones.
