Types of Notch Display on Smartphone: Punch-Hole Vs Water-Drop which is the best?

In today’s post, we’ll be looking at the types of notch display. Have you ever thought of which is the best between waterdrop and punch-hole display on smartphones? Before choosing, it is good to have an in-depth knowledge of both display types. This post will give us a better understanding of them and help us decipher which one is the best.

Apple was arguably the first phone maker to debut the notch display with their iPhone’s 10th anniversary – the iPhone X in September 2017. Or at least they made it to become mainstream, because the Essential phone was released in May 2017 and featured a tiny ‘O’ notch display. Since then, we have witnessed a wide array of notch designs in terms of shape and size in the industry. This has led to different types of notch displays.

The most common thing featured on the notch is the selfie camera. But since the punch-hole smartphone doesn’t have a notch, the selfie camera is now embedded underneath the display and a cutout is made on the display to show the selfie camera. That cutout is what we refer to as a punch-hole.

The waterdrop notch features just one selfie camera, while the regular big rectangular notch can take up to two cameras as seen on the iPhone X. The same goes for the punch-hole display. In order to accommodate two selfie cameras, the cutout in the display gets bigger forming a pill-shaped hole instead.

Examples of Smartphones with notch display

• iPhone XS Max – big notch
• Samsung Galaxy M30s – waterdrop notch
• Tecno Spark 3 – big notch
• Tecno Spark 5 Air – waterdrop
• Oppo Reno 3 – waterdrop

Examples of Smartphones with punch-hole display

• Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 – punch-hole
• Xiaomi Redmi K30 – pill-shaped
• OnePlus 8 – punch-hole
Infinix Note 7 – punch-hole
Infinix Hot 9 – punch-hole

There is no clear advantage between the notch vs punch-hole displays. Both types of display come with distraction and are just concepts by OEMs in order to achieve a bezel-less device. It all boils down to your preference. As for me, I’d take the punch-hole concept over the notch.
