Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 announced as the successor of the Snapdragon 660

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 has been introduced by Qualcomm as an update to the 660 mid-range chipset. This is coming just weeks after the Snapdragon 710 made its debut on the Mi 8 SE. The 670 and 710 has a lot in common and they are way better than the 660.

Looking at the specs sheet, the 670 is quite identical to the 710. It comes with an octa-core processor and clocks at the exact same speed. It’s also loaded with two big cores and six power efficient ones, all Kryo 360. However, the two big ones are based on Cortex-A75 architecture. While the Cortex-A55 reigns supreme on the rest.

There’s a slight difference though, the 670’s big cores are clocked to the 2.0GHz max, while others clocks at 1.7GHz. This makes it a little closer to the 660 rather than the 710. However, Qualcomm stressed that the 670 provides “25% better performance” compared to the 660. Well, at least we know that the 710 will be better than the 670. This is because Qualcomm said the 710 was “35% faster” than the 660 when it was launched.

Nonetheless, the SD670 was built on the more power efficient 10nm LPP manufacturing process, just like the 710 and 845 flagship chip. The new chipset comes with a new graphics processor tagged the Adreno 615. However, details of the GPU is a bit blurry at the moment. Although it won’t be as powerful as the 616 on the SD710.

The SD670 can only take care of 25MP single camera or 16MP in a dual setup. This means it’s a mid-range chip and in no way in the league of flagship chips. Furthermore, it doesn’t support HDR video recording and there’s no support for QHD+ displays. The modem is a Snapdragon X12 LTE, this is exactly the same one found on previous generation 660.

It’s 2018, so the 670 comes with AI features. Specifically, AI Engine and other AI-driven ability that’s not on the 660. The new chipset will be available in lower-midrange smartphones in the coming weeks.
