Xiaomi Mi 8 gets launch date, see expected specs

The Xiaomi Mi 8 has finally gotten a launch date, this means Xiaomi is putting the expected Mi 7 smartphone to a hold for now. The new Mi 8 smartphone will debut on the 31st of May, and we might get to see the Mi Band 3 unveiled as well. Xiaomi confirmed the launch date, saying the Mi 8 was designed to celebrate the company’s eighth anniversary.

No words yet if there will ever be a Mi 7, although Xiaomi might surprise us and introduce it before the end of the year. Nonetheless, the Mi 8 is coming next week and Xiaomi has lots of unique features to debut as well. The company is creating a proprietary 3D facial sensing technology, which is expected to take on Apple’s Face ID. The feature might come with the Xiaomi Mi 8, as the device is scheduled to debut in Shenzhen, China on May 31.

According to a tweet by Donovan Sung, who is Xiaomi’s Global spokesperson, he confirmed the launch date as well. “To celebrate our 8th year anniversary, we’ll be launching Mi 8 at our annual flagship product launch in Shenzhen on May 31,” he tweeted. The company has also sold ticketsĀ of the annual launch event and expected to have around 5,000 attendees. The Mi Band 3 fitness tracker might also be on showcase that day, and get its moments on screen.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 specifications is still in the rumour stage yet. It’s expected to come with a notch if previous renders and rumours are anything to go by. A Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip should be on-board, there would be a variant with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage space. The operating system should be Android 8.1 Oreo with the latest MIUI. Then the new Face ID which Xiaomi is working on should be accessible as well. Overall, the Xiaomi Mi 8 will be ready to counter OnePlus 6 in terms of specs, custom features and value for money.
