Apple unveils M1 Ultra, the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer

Apple has unveiled the new M1 Ultra chip, a new M1 processor. The design of this chip is identical to that of the M1 Max. The M1 Ultra is a desktop processor that debuted in Apple’s new Mac Studio desktop computer.

Apple’s new UltraFusion interlinks the die of two M1 Max chips to develop a system on a chip in the M1 Ultra SoC. (SoC). “M1 Ultra provides breathtaking computing power to the new Mac Studio while maintaining industry-leading performance per watt,” according to Apple.

The M1 Ultra chip has 114 billion transistors, the most ever found in a computer chip. Up to 128GB of high-bandwidth, low-latency unified memory can be configured into the chip. A 20-core CPU (16 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores), a 64-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine are all included in the chip.

The M1 Ultra chip, according to Apple, can transcode video to ProRes up to 5.6 times faster than a 28-core Mac Pro with Afterburner. Apple’s groundbreaking UltraFusion technology employs a silicon interposer to connect the chips across more than 10,000 signals, resulting in a massive 2.5TB/s of low-latency inter-processor bandwidth — more than four times that of the leading multi-chip interconnect technology.

Furthermore, the 64-core GPU is nearly 8 times the size of the M1’s GPU. With M1 Ultra, Apple’s unified memory architecture has been scaled up. The memory bandwidth has been increased to 800 gigabits per second. Up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video can be played back on the new Mac Studio with M1 Ultra.
