HMD just released a new smartphone, kinda. The newly released smartphone is named Nokia 8.1, a successor to the Nokia 7 Plus and just basically another version of the Nokia X7 in China for the Western Market with some slight changes. Let’s go ahead and have a look at the specifications.

Nokia 8.1 Design And Display
The Nokia 8.1 has a pretty standard design sporting a front and back glass with aluminium frame. The 6.18-inch IPS LCD display has a 1080p resolution with an eye-popping 408ppi. Aspect ratio stands At 19:9 with the U shaped notch up top to house the front-facing camera.
At the back is a vertically placed dual-camera setup with the fingerprint sensor just below the cameras and an LED flash at the left. The device features an Hybrid SIM which means you can use One Nano SIM and One MicroSD card or Two Nano SIMs. The device weighs 180 grams, measures 8mm in thickness and comes in colours Blue, Silver, Steel and Copper + Iron.
Nokia 8.1 Camera Review
At the back of the device are two cameras; a 13MP main shooter with an f/1.8 aperture, dual pixel PDAF, OIS and a secondary 13MP camera. It also features Zeiss optics, a dual-LED dual-tone flash, panorama and HDR. The camera is capable of recording 4k and 1080p videos at 30fps. Moving over to the front, we have a single 20MP camera for selfies with f/2.0 aperture.
Nokia 8.1 Hardware and Software
In the hardware department, the Nokia 8.1 is powered by the Snapdragon 710 chipset which is based on the 10nm FinFET process technology with 4 cores, clocking speeds of up to 2.2GHz alongside an Adreno 616 GPU for gaming/graphics.
Unlike the Chinese version, the Nokia 8.1 has just one variant which has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Like I said earlier, storage space is expandable via the Second SIM slot up to 400GB. As for the Operating System, it runs on the latest Android 9.0 Pie out if the box and since this is Android One, expect the stock Android experience with no UI overlay and constant updates for the next 2 years.
Battery & Network Connectivity
The device is powered by a 3,500mAh battery capacity with fast charging of up to 18W. It also has 4G LTE, NFC and Bluetooth v5.0 with A2DP and LE. A USB Type-C port is also onboard with support for USB On The Go. WiFi, WiFi direct and WiFi hotspot are also present, not forgetting the 3.5mm jack which some phone manufacturers seem to be removing these days.
