Qualcomm’s latest chipset the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 is finally here, but not for smartphones. The chipset is expected to power laptops and 2-in-1s, we’ll get to see one later this year. In terms of what it offers, it’s basically an upgraded version of the 845 on modern flagship smartphones coming with a speed and battery boost. The chipset was designed mainly for laptops or 2-in-1 tablets.
The 835 chip previously used in Windows-on-ARM devices is also seen on some Android smartphones, so anything is possible. But Qualcomm specifically launched the chip on the main tablet body with a foldable keyboard, according to the video released. The tablets running on the 850 will have a better cooling system than smartphones running on 845.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 comes with Kryo 385 Gold cores which now clocks at 2.95 GHz. It’s still not up to the clocking speed of the recently launched ROG Phone from ASUS, but overall the performance will be sustained for longer too than previous chips. The 850 also promises a 30% boost in performance and 20% better battery life, this is however compared to Snapdragon 835 powered laptops.
Devices powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 will offer “multi-day” battery life, with the X20 LTE modem pushing the downlink speeds up to 1.2 Gbps. It’s worthy to note that Microsoft recently updated ARM Windows with 64-bit Edge, this will make the 850 chip work seamlessly on Windows. There’s also support for HDR and aptX HD audio.
