Tecno recently released a successor to the Tecno Spark 2 smartphone – The Tecno Spark 3 – which comes with some slight improvements in the camera, display and design. You should also know that there are two versions of the new Tecno Spark 3; One with 1GB of RAM, a single rear camera and runs Android 8.1 Oreo while the other has 2GB of RAM, dual rear camera and runs Android 9.0 Pie – everything else remains the same on both models, similar to the Spark 2.
There is also a pro version of the Tecno Spark 3 but we won’t be comparing that here. Without further ado, let’s get started.
TECNO Spark 3 VS Spark 2 – Design & Display
The major upgrade or perhaps difference between the new Tecno Spark 3 and Spark 2 is the design and display. Display-wise, the new Tecno Spark 3 is sporting a 6.2-inch IPS LCD display with the new 19:9 aspect ratio and a notch to house the front-facing camera, speaker grill and other sensors.
Spark 2, on the other hand, is rocking an older 18:9 aspect which brings the display down to 6.0-inch. At the back of the spark 2, is a single rear camera and a fingerprint sensor while on the Spark 3 there is a single or dual rear-facing camera depending on the model, both of which have a fingerprint sensor as well.
As expected, both the Tecno Spark 2 and Spark 3 have a dual SIM slot and a dedicated MicroSD card for additional storage. Colour options available for the new Spark 3 are Grey, Blue and Gold while for the Spark 2 are Champagne Gold, Black, Coral Blue and Metallic Red.
TECNO Spark 3 VS Spark 2 – Hardware & Software
Nothing changed in this department. Both the Tecno Spark 2 and Spark 3 are rocking the MediaTek MT6580 SoC – a chipset based on the 28nm process technology with 4 cores clocking speeds of up to 1.3GHz Alongside a Mali-400MP2 GPU for gaming.
Both devices have 1GB or 2GB of RAM depending on the model, both of which have 16GB of expandable storage. The 1GB RAM model of both the Spark 2 and Spark 3 runs Android 8.1 Oreo Go Edition while the 2GB Model of Spark 2 and Spark 3 runs Android 8.1 Oreo and Android 9.0 Pie respectively. As expected, they are all covered with Tecno’s HiOS UI which brings a universal feel to all the devices.
Camera, Battery & Connectivity
Tecno Spark 2 has a single 13MP rear camera with an f/2.0 aperture, AF, HDR, and Triple LED flash and can shoot 1080p videos at 30fps. The single front-facing 8MP camera is equipped with a dual-LED flash.
Spark 3 on the other also has a single 13MP rear camera on the 1GB RAM model and a dual 13MP + 2MP on the 2GB RAM model. Both of which have front-facing 8MP selfie cameras with a dual-LED flash.
No upgrades to the battery as the new Spark 3 is still housing the same 3,500mAh Battery capacity found on the Spark 2. There is also no fast charging here nor 4G LTE connectivity. However, there are WiFi, WiFi hotspot, WiFi direct, Bluetooth, GPS, a 3.5mm jack and a micro USB port on both the Spark 2 and Spark 3.
TECNO Spark 3 VS Spark 2 – Price
Spark 2 costs between N35,000 – N40,000 depending on the configuration you get. Spark 3 on the other hand also hovers around the N34,000-40,0000 price point as the previous Spark 2. In my opinion, if you already have the Spark 2 then there is no need to upgrade just yet but if you’re looking to buy one of the two then I’ll suggest you go for the recent Spark 3; the one with 2GB/16GB.
